TIC

Trout-in-the-Classroom Underway for 2009-2010
The success of the TIC program can be attributed to the combined effort of several organizations and many individuals dedicated to the environment. During the early part of the year and ongoing into the Summer and Fall months, Jessica Griglak, NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, Resource Interpretive Specialist, was working on gathering new schools for the TIC Program.

As we are 1st a cold water conservation organization serving Ocean and Monmouth, with a little fishing on the side, the following is provided for your information and thoughts.

Met with the owner of 38 acres that straddle the Toms River in Jackson TWP, just down stream from Hope Chapel Road.  According to him Ocean County is planning to buy this section with the idea to develop in to a park.  Have no more information on how solid the counties plans are or time table.

I explained who we were and that we have no money.  After that discussion, what he would like is for us, each to write the county and confirm that this section of the river will support trout and that it should be developed as a park for water sports like fishing and canoeing. Not left to become an eye sore brush pile.  JSTU's role would be as a special interest group, expressing our-public- wants to Ocean County who would provide most of the money and material and man power.  Thus from a chapter point this could be developed into several conservation projects that we could define and go for some grant money to develop things like fixing up the stream bank and plant trees, paths and bridges.  May have to conduct a study of the water to insure that the Ph, and so on is good for the trout.

Whether or not you fish the Toms, consider how access to this property and the Toms River would be a plus for recreation here.  The NJ F&W would also be asked to add the bridge crossing the Toms River at Hope Chapel road as a trout stocking point.  I would like your thoughts, so e-mail me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
