Staffed a table at the Oct 1 FREC Conservation Day. Thanks to Bill Praschil and Colin Archer for their support Our subject was what makes Water- Trout Water. This fit right in with the conservation theme of the day.
Would make me so happy if the next expert can explain just what is polution that is bad for the fish and the fish food. So far this question has always been met with a blank stare. I talked a little about polution in the Conservation/other/What is Trout Water.
Members of the Jersey Shore Chapter and friends of the Toms River assisted the NJ F&W with the Fall Stocking of the TCA, with 150 large Brown and Rainbows. The high water made the stocking by floating a bit touché so the trout scheduled for the TCA were stocked in Cedar Glenn section. Trout were also stocked in the River Wood section. However concern that due to wet road and down trees the F&W truck would not be able to make the trip along the river, the trout were released (stocked) at one spot.
The Banquet this held Sat 15 - reports are that all had a good time. Joe Quattrock provided a summary.
The JSTU board is developing the following projects for the 2012. As these projects are within our Non Profit Mission your donations will be tax deductible. To raise the funds and work these projects - your help - both funds contribution and your labor is needed,
- Sponsor a student to attend the Cold Water School in June - $250 per student. Colin Archer has the lead on this and will need help working up how the selection will be accomplished. Touch base with him.
- Sponsor and furnish a school with the Trout in Class Room equipment - cost is estimated at $1500 per school. Need a program leader to work out who will get the system and equipment to be bought. Touch base with Colin.
- Install a kiosk at the Trout Conservation area, explaining the TCA mission and regulation and other information. Estimate this project will require $2000. Have a chance to get a Kiosk that was made for the Flat Brook TCA. Bill Praschil has the lead on this so if you are interested touch base with him.
Bill Saloukas introduce the speaker from the Monmouth and Ocean mosquito control commission. He covered not only the life cycle of mayfly's and caddis but also updated us on current problems with mosquito, ticks and Lyme disease.
For ticks the best defense is a repellent based on permethrin sprayed on your clothing. I use a product Sawyer from Cabalas and Dicks also has somthing. The only way to make sure your not bringing the ticks into your house is to run ALL CLOTHING in the dryer at High temp for at least 55 - 60 min.
